The Holy Land is a happening place, year-round – see it to believe it!
When gearing up for your first-ever Israel trip, it’s a good idea to plan out which places you’ll visit and which sites you’ll see – and we’ve even covered this topic earlier in the year. But if your upcoming Israel trip is not your first, or if you’re simply looking to visit less “traditional” Christian destinations when visiting the Holy Land, this is the post for you. We’re taking you off the Via Dolorosa and down spiritual paths that are sure to inspire.
Our top 5 Christian destinations to visit in Israel in 2020, for your convenience.
Head north to Israel’s Galilee region and you will find the fertile Jezreel Valley, known in the Scripture as the Valley of Armageddon, due to the prophecy that the final battle and second coming of Christ will be at this very location. Ascend Mount Tabor and read the Bible verses as you take in the breathtaking view of Armageddon Valley, before heading on over to the stunning Transfiguration Church, for an extended spiritual experience, surrounded by natural beauty.
While in the north, another must-see Christian destination is Tabgha, a Sea of Galilee fishing town, home to several mosaic-rich churches, such as the Church of the Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes and the Church of the Primacy of Saint Peter. Tour these hallowed halls, take in the spiritual artwork, and imagine the landmark scenes that took place right there, so many years ago. It’ll be hard to resist plunging into the sea and fishing for your own fishes to barbeque and eat with freshly baked loaves!

“Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” This verse, cited in Matthew 5:3, was reportedly spouted from the Mount of Beatitudes, during an inspirational sermon given by Jesus himself. As you stand at the top of this magnificent mount, you can take in the breathtaking views, before embarking on a tour of religiously significant sites: the 8-sided Church of the Beatitudes, Domus Galilaeae, the “house of the Galilee,” a Christian center for studies and meetings and the ruins of a 4th Century Byzantine church.
While we can’t know for certain, it is believed that the place where Jesus miraculously turned water into wine at a wedding was in the northern village of Kfar Cana of Kfar Hana. Immerse yourself in the legend, by visiting this town, touring its churches and chapels, and even buying a piece of local pottery as a souvenir. Who knows? Maybe doing so will inspire a new miracle in modern times!
Adventure seekers, delight! The Jesus Trail perfectly integrates physical activity with spiritual inspiration – but you need a good three to four days to cover this 60-kilometer hike. Walk in the footsteps of Jesus and his disciples, as you breathe in the fresh Israeli air, see sites and sights and match Bible verses to locations that are right before your eyes. Note: Make sure to have enough water and protective gear, especially during the summer season.
